"I believe the greatest danger in behavioral health is when systems prioritize compliance over humanity. When paperwork matters more than the person in front of us, treatment becomes management. Healing requires agency, honesty, and approaches flexible enough to meet people where they actually are."

About Richard
Life for Richard is built on a foundation of loyalty, shared values, and rigorous personal discipline. He shares his home with Stinkus Maximus—the fattest blue-nose pit bull you’ll ever meet—who acts as part household security, part comic relief, and part philosopher, reminding Richard daily that naps are a discipline and no one should take life too seriously. His clinical insights are balanced by an active, hands-on lifestyle that includes riding motorcycles, working on independent building projects, and exploring quiet foothills access points along the Boise Greenbelt. On any given weekend, you might find him grabbing a slice of Guidio's Pizza, enjoying fresh fruit pies from Volcano Produce, or preparing for his favorite holiday, Halloween. His personal soundtrack is as diverse as his background, shifting from Blue October to Wargasm to Johnny Cash, depending on the mood. Victor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning anchors his bookshelf, reinforcing his guiding belief: "All people need help sometime in their life. It is our duty to help, to put their needs before our own and do the best to listen and foster change."

Early Life
Raised in environments defined by service, discipline, and a profound expectation of self-reliance, Richard shaped his early years by learning how to navigate challenges and search for a path beyond his immediate surroundings. A pivotal realization during his youth—that environmental limitations do not dictate internal potential—became the driving force behind his personal and professional journey. This background instilled a core conviction that human character is defined by how an individual operates under extreme pressure, a standard that guided his transition into combat service for Naval Special Warfare. Witnessing firsthand how trauma is often misunderstood by rigid institutional systems, he chose to enter the behavioral health field to offer a more honest, humane, and protective space for individuals who have been managed rather than helped.

Education & Training
Richard earned his Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work at Boise State University, where he demonstrated systemic leadership as an officer in the Phi Alpha Honor Society and a Senator for the School of Health Sciences. He completed his academic journey by earning a Doctor of Human Services from Capella University, specializing in macro-level program development. His military service and intensive clinical internship within the Idaho Maximum Security Institution anchored his practice in the realities of forensic trauma—demonstrating that consistent presence during a crisis is the baseline of therapeutic efficacy.
"My vision for the Treasure Valley is a robust support network where veterans, justice-involved individuals, and people carrying complex trauma can access housing, clinical safety, and community without having to fight broken systems to receive help."

Visions Journey
Transitioning from a career in naval operations and military leadership, Richard initially entered Visions Counseling & Education as a Community-Based Rehabilitation Specialist (CBRS) in 2023. This experience taught him that sustainable clinical progress must conform to human reality rather than rigid academic theory. He expanded into executive leadership because Visions preserves the operational flexibility required to merge rigorous clinical standards with authentic human engagement.

Beyond Visions
Beyond his immediate clinical practice, Dr. Renz serves as the President of Visions of Hope, directing specialized veteran advocacy initiatives and formal collaborations with state probation and parole. His ultimate professional milestone is the development of a scalable, village-style housing and comprehensive support model designed to systematically reduce recidivism throughout Idaho. By integrating regional reentry partnerships with clinical care, he works to build enduring structural safety nets across the state.
